Description |
Unknown Woman #1 is a part of a series of paintings that Martyn painted in 1987 to 1990, painting portraits of various women. It is very expressive in vivid in colour, as seen in many of her works from this time. Biographical Information: Carol Martyn studied at Victoria College, University of Toronto, and at the Stratford Normal school. Her work was a way of dealing with several tragedies in her life. Martyn travelled through the art meccas of Europe, Mexico and Central America in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Her first major art show was held at the Toronto's Aggregation Gallery in 1971. In 1976 Martyn had her first solo exhibition at Bau-Xi Gallery in Toronto, near the Art Gallery of Ontario. Martyn died of cancer in July 1995, just months before her lifetime retrospective show in Stratford, Ontario. |
