Description |
Anne Meredith Barry (1932-2003) was an award-winning printmaker and painter known for her landscapes of Newfoundland and Labrador. Born in Toronto in 1932, Barry began painting full-time after graduating from the Ontario College of Art. Her first trip to Newfoundland left her captivated by the province's landscape and culture and she returned regularly to teach, paint, and make prints. In 1986, she settled there for good, purchasing and refurbishing the former St. Michael's Printshop on the Avalon Peninsula's Southern Shore. This work was done one year prior to Barry's move to Newfoundland. In contrast to the tall cliffs and majestic navy waves that Barry's practice became known for, April Marsh, Point Pelee National Park is distinct through its muted tones, flat landscape, and stillness. Biographical Information: Barry received many awards and honours for her work. She was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, received an honorary doctorate from the Memorial University of Newfoundland, and was awarded the Queen's Jubilee Medal for her support of the arts in Newfoundland and Labrador. Barry's work can be found in private and public collections, including The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery's Permanent Collection, the Canada Council Art Bank, the Emily Carr College of Art and Design, the Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery, the Artists for Kids Trust, and the Governor General of Canada's Collection. She passed away in January, 2003. |
