Untitled Still Life (2006) is characteristic of Altwerger's loose and dream-like watercolour style. In particular, how each colour bleeds into another is an attribute that distinguishes Altwerger's flowers. Biographical Information: Born in Toronto, Libby Altwerger attended the Ontario College of Art in her native city as a scholarship student, graduating with the silver medal for painting and drawing. She earned a certificate for recreation at the University of Toronto and resided at the University Settlement House for three years as art director. Widely travelled, Altwerger toured through Europe, the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Altwerger taught art and design at Ryerson for eleven years and offered art seminars throughout Ontario communities. A full time painter, Altwerger exhibited her watercolours and prints in many solo and group shows in Canada and abroad, and won many awards and honors, including a gold medal and a purchase award at the Institute Feminine Culturelle, Vichy in France; the Sterling Trust award for lithography (1965); the Royal Bank of Canada purchase award, and the Ontario Society of Art Show (1979). Altwerger's works are in many permanent public and private collections such as the Hamilton Art Gallery, the London Art Gallery, and the Windsor Art Gallery, She is a member of the Ontario Society of Art, the Canadian Society of Watercolour Painters, and a former member of the Canadian Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. |
