Description |
Jeannie Thib's works investigate meanings of the body and the social construction of female identity. She uses a variety of media, including multi-panelled prints, chalk drawings, and hand-sewn paper gloves with printed inscriptions. Thib includes text in most of her works to give the images meaning at both a visual and written level. She is concerned with the contribution of an object to the encyclopedic archive. In this series, Thib treats images of hands as if they were landscapes, embedded with a rich history and narrative. Fragmented into segments with line, drawing, and text, each part of the hand becomes one precious object which will help to broaden the knowledge of the whole. Biographical Information: Born in North Bay, Ontario, in 1955, Thib received her BFA from York University in 1979 before focusing her career in Toronto. She exhibited nationally and internationally, with works in collections of institutions such as Montreal's Musée des beaux-arts, the University of Toronto Art Collection, the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, and the National Gallery. With a commercial career represented by Katzman Kamen Gallery in Toronto and Joan Ferneyhough Gallery in North Bay, the artist's public art career brought in commissions from the Bank of Montreal and Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre in Medicine Hat, among others. She passed away in early 2014. |
