Description |
Gaspé is a lakeside scene being among the finest and notable for the artist's use of vivid colour. This piece was done in McCarthy's so-called "Romano" period, in which she uses a brighter range of colour, inspired by the painter Umberto Romano, whom she visited in Maine in 1948. This example of experimentation with colour and abstracted form seems to be a precursor to her later work. McCarthy was such a dedicated landscape artist she painted every province and territory in Canada. Biographical Information: Doris McCarthy was an avid Canadian painter who has documented landscapes across the country. Her practice was heavily rooted in abstracting arctic landscapes and icebergs. In this piece, McCarthy depicts techniques of seal hunting and the province of Nunavut, where houses akin to the one presented commonly contain skins outside and within. Having spent most of her life in Ontario, McCarthy frequently travelled extensive lengths to immerse herself in other cultures and environments. Born in Calgary, McCarthy attended the Ontario College of Art to pursue an artistic education. Her work has been exhibited and collected extensively in Canada and abroad in both public and private art galleries including the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario. She was made a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and was also the recipient of the Order of Ontario, and the Order of Canada. She passed away on November 25, 2010 at the age of 100.
