Stephen Andrews is a Canadian artist based in Toronto. Born in 1956 in Sarnia, Ontario, Andrews is known for making artworks that mediate between analogue technique and mass media imagery. He deals with memory, identity, technology, and their representations in various media including drawing, animation, and, recently, painting. By using a technique that gives equal weight to both media and message of his chosen topics, Andrews creates a space for reflection on our daily consumption of the imagery we get from what he calls "virtual or ether" media. Picture This (1994) includes 16 paper panels, comprising an image of a man's face and text when installed. Biographical Information: Andrews has exhibited his work in Canada, the U.S., Brazil, Scotland, France and Japan, and is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Belkin Art Gallery, the Schwartz Collection, and Harvard University, as well as many private collections. |
