Tom La Pierre's paintings are distinguished by his uncompromising dedication to his personal vision. Throughout his life, La Pierre was preoccupied by contrasts: dark and light moods, playfulness, solemnity, ritual, life and death. His imagery is both surreal and symbolic. In Waterlillies La Pierre reimagines and reinterprets a subject and scene made famous by Impressionist artist Claude Monet to give a vibrant and dynamic presentation. Biographical Information: La Pierre is known for his strong, individualistic images. Among his influences are the great German Expressionists, Max Beckman, Otto Dix and George Gross, British painter Stanley Spencer, and American magic realist, Ivan Albright. A knowledgeable draftsman, printmaker and painter, La Pierre's work can be found in many private and public collections including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, and The Montreal Museum of Fine Art. Tom and his wife Pat have taught for over twenty-five years at the Ontario College of Art and Design. Although they have traveled the world extensively, it is their northern residence at Jack's Lake that has been a source of great inspiration for their individual practices which focus on the wonder of nature. |
