Shives' experiences as an exploratory mountain climber have provided a rich repertoire of imagery for his work over the years. He has made a number of first ascents of peaks from the north Cascades to the glaciered peaks of northern British Columbia and has climbed with some of the province's top mountaineers. The landscape is always present in Arnold Shives' art. Shives' ability to extract the essential nature from a scene reduces complex forms thus allowing the crux of the scene or subject spring to life.
